5 Important Things To Remember Before Visiting Africa [Travel Tips]
Africa holds many adventures
Oftentimes, when people hear the name “Africa,” images of wildlife in an
African safari easily come to mind because it’s the picture that’s most frequently depicted by the media. While that is true, Africa is a diverse and colorful continent that holds many possibilities for adventure seekers.
Think of beautiful artwork, stunning architecture, fascinating culture,
breathtaking beaches, unforgettable food, and more. The list just seems endless. As such, a trip to any African country is every traveler’s dream.
African countries to consider for your trip
Planning a trip to Africa can be overwhelming for some people. Thus, one can
begin by narrowing down the choices to a few popular African countries. Some
of the African nations that travelers can consider are Egypt, Mauritius, South
Africa, Ghana, Tanzania, Senegal, Angola, Niger, Tunisia, Congo, Mozambique,
and Namibia.
Each of these African countries has its own unique sights and experience to
offer to visitors so any of them are worth visiting.
Top things to keep in mind before traveling to Africa
Similar to traveling to any other new continent, there are several things that
you should remember before going on an African trip.
These are just basic items that are meant to make your journey to Africa as safe and as comfortable as possible. Here they are:
1. Buy travel insurance
Before visiting Africa or any other destination, you absolutely must make sure that you have travel insurance. Even if you’re generally in good health, you never know what could happen when you’re in a new place that is very far from
home.
Travel health insurance can cover the costs of any medical care you might need while on the road,
giving you peace of mind while on holiday. It’s especially important to have coverage if you’re planning activities outdoors, such as camping or climbing,
as these are higher-risk activities.
Make sure your plan includes extreme sports or mountain rescue services, as these are often extras you have to add on.
2. Update your vaccinations
Depending on where you’re traveling from and the vaccinations you’ve had recently, you may need boosters before your trip to Africa. This is because
there will be some diseases that are more prevalent over there that you’re
less likely to come into contact with where you live.
Vaccinations for illnesses like diphtheria, hepatitis A, rabies, and tetanus might be required. To be sure, always let your doctor know about your plans to
travel well in advance.
3. Bring enough cash
In many places in Africa, cards might not yet be accepted. If you are bringing
a card, tell your bank that you’re going to be away so your account doesn’t
get frozen.
To ensure that you have enough cash on hand for expenses like food and transportation, don’t forget to convert currency at home before your trip.
Moreover, never keep all your cash in one place and have an emergency fund tucked away somewhere very safe.
4. Invest in a portable charger
If you’re planning to be out and about in nature most of the time, it’s a good idea to invest in good quality and high-capacity power bank. With a power bank, you’ll be able to charge your phone on the go without having to wait to arrive in a place where there is electricity. In some areas, there will be few
and far between and you’ll want your phone powered up while camping.
5. Plan your clothing carefully
Africa is hot, it’s true, but you’ll need to prepare for drops in temperature too. If you’re planning to spend days in the desert, it can get really
cold at night
so make sure you have light layers or a jacket for the evening.
It’s also important to note that some African countries may not appreciate
shorts
and vest tops due to religious reasons. Keeping your skin covered can be a good idea if you’re going out into nature anyway, as it will offer some protection against the sun as well as plants and thorns.
It’s best to prioritize
practical clothes in Africa, you’ll be a lot more comfortable and able to
enjoy a wide range of activities.
Epilogue
Africa packs many possibilities for different types of travelers. Hence, a
trip to Africa is very exciting and can be considered a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity.
To make your trip truly unforgettable and enjoyable, make sure to come to
Africa well-prepared with some of the basic necessities that are indispensable
when traveling.
Ultimately, you’ll realize that a few small adjustments can bring you great
advantages during your African trip.
