Heritage Series: National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

February 12, 2021

Not many people know the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus but it’s a beautiful church located in Makati that is worth visiting.

In a quiet neighborhood in San Antonio Village, Makati City stands the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It’s not really as popular as the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church or the Sts. Peter and Paul Parish Church when it comes to weddings and even baptisms. However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t consider the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for your special occasion.

How I discovered the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

I first saw the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus when I was working in the San Antonio Village area more than a decade ago. We were outside that time because of an earthquake drill when, to my surprise, I saw that there was a church at the back of our office building.

The National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus had a simple façade but it nevertheless caught my attention because of how serene it looked and how spacious the front lawn was. I haven’t been inside the church though because I soon moved to a different location. However, I kept thinking about the church and how I should find time to visit it soon.

Six years later, I was finally able to return to the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus together with Khris. We were out for a morning walk one weekend and I told her that I know a beautiful church nearby and we could visit it.

When we finally arrived at the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, it was the same good-looking church that I remember. What surprised me though was how breathtaking the interiors looked. The ceiling was high and the aisle was long. Probably the highlight of the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus’ interiors is the altar, which looked grand from any angle.

The side entrances were also tall so that the interiors are bathed in natural light. What’s good about the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is that it’s not located along a busy street, as such you are assured of a solemn ceremony when you do decide to have your wedding or baptism here.

We said a little prayer and after that, we went to the shrine to light a candle.

    A modern church

The National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a fairly modern church with numerous classic features and several works of art.

Smaller chapels were built around the area since the 1950s but it was in 1968 when the church was built in its present location. The Sacred Heart Chapel was finally opened in 1971.

The community where the chapel is located was eventually converted into a parish. Over the course of a short period, the parish was finally designated as the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus based on the recommendation of the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines.
