Sbarro is a name that I have come to associate with fresh, delicious, and high-quality Italian cuisine.
Sbarro is a name that I have come to associate with fresh, delicious, and high-quality Italian cuisine. Since coming to the Philippine shores in 1990, Sbarro has been one of the longest-serving foreign restaurants in the country with an almost three-decade local presence. In fact, Sabarro is the first Italian restaurant that I became familiar with.
Sbarro: satisfying Filipinos' Italian cuisine craving for decades
I remember seeing a Sbarro branch at SM North Edsa when I was a freshman in college. I was very new in Manila then and thought how nice it might be to try eating in an authentic Italian restaurant. I got to try it eventually and I remember enjoying every minute of my experience at Sbarro.
Just recently, Khris and I were taking a stroll at SM City Fairview after Miguel’s haircut. When we saw the Sbarro branch at the mall, we immediately craved lasagna and baked macaroni so we decided to have lunch there.
Ambiance
I really could not say much about Sabarro’s ambiance except that it’s a fast-food restaurant. I did not mean that to be a bad thing, but that is the easiest way of conjuring an image of this Italian restaurant.
Well, we were in a mall and this Sbarro branch is small. There were just a few diners when we went there but it obviously could not accommodate a large crowd. The restaurant is clean and well-lit, and the seats are comfortable, nonetheless.
The counter where food is also prepared |
What we liked about Sbarro is that every batch of food is newly-cooked, as can be seen in the open prep area and big oven. If you want to see how the cook prepares the big pizzas and pasta, just take a peek over your shoulder and feast your eyes on the cook skillfully kneading the pizza dough and seasoning the pasta dishes on the spot.
Food at Sbarro
We ordered Sabarro’s Baked Zitti (whole, Php209), Meat Lasagna (Php237), and a slice of Chicago Deep Dish (Php229). We loved how savory the Baked Ziti was. The tomato sauce had the right balance of herbs, seasonings, and acidity. The cheeses also provided a deep and rich flavor to the dish.

Meanwhile, the Meat Lasagna was loaded with ground beef and cheese. Likewise, the sauce was well-seasoned, herby, and had the right balance of flavors that diners look for in authentic Italian cooking. What we also like about the pasta dishes is that the noodles remain al dente and delightful to eat.
Lastly, Sbarro’s version of the Chicago Deep Dish pizza is recommended if you are looking for a filling and delicious pizza meal. It’s actually heavy on the belly and can even be shared when dining with a companion.

All in all, we had an enjoyable and filling meal at Sbarro’s. We actually had leftovers which we asked the servers to wrap for takeaways.
Price is also reasonable. The servings are big and can easily satisfy two hungry adults.
