Our experience at Samgyupsalamat
Samgyupsalamat’s name is a fusion of the words “Samgyupsal” which is Korean
for Pork Belly and “Salamat” which is the word “Thank you” in Filipino.
Samgyupsalamat is the very first unlimited Koran barbecue restaurant that I tried but before that, I have already heard many good reviews about it from both my friends and colleagues and that got me intrigued. I was cautioned though that we had to wait for at least an hour before being seated but the food is well worth our patience.
I have not tasted Korean food before so I have no point of comparison about the authenticity of Samgyupsalamat's Korean barbecue but I did like the food here. In fact, it got me hooked to Korean barbecue buffets, and would have it whenever there is a chance to.
When it comes to food, Samgyupsalamat definitely does a good job in satisfying the Pinoy palate with Korean flavors.

What we love at Samgyupsalamat
We tried Samgyupsalamat's branch in Metropolitan Avenue. Set in a quiet and
unassuming corner, you would not readily notice this restaurant unless you
are really looking for it. The place is small so expect long lines if you go
here beyond 7:00 PM.
By the way, they do not accept reservations so it’s best to come here early. Samgyupsalamat serves unlimited lunch from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM and unlimited dinner from 3:00 PM to 2:00 AM.

The tables are fitted with a grill and exhaust. It’s not an air-conditioned
restaurant so that the smoke, which is actually just minimal, would not
linger inside.

Here's what we love about Samgyupsalamat Unlimited Korean Barbecue:
1. Affordable price
Samgyupsalamat's affordability is what makes it a winner. We ordered the
Unlimited 2 menu for just P499 per head. This selection is composed of nine
kinds of pork and beef. You may try everything and as much as you can, just
don’t leave any unconsumed food on your plate.
Unlimited miso soup |
2. There are many side dishes to choose from
It was my first time to be in a Korean barbecue restaurant and I was
surprised by the selection of side dishes.
Our table looked like a feast even before the meats arrived. There were lettuce leaves for wrapping the grilled meats, various vegetable side dishes like kimchi, pickled white onions, and baby potatoes. We were told by our server that we can also ask for soup, rice, fish cakes, and steamed eggs, anytime since these were all unlimited. My favorites among the side dishes were the kimchi, and the light and fluffy steamed eggs, which I enjoyed eating as much as I can.
Take note though that the drinks are ordered separately because these are not included in the unlimited menu.

3. Flavorful dips and sauces
What we also like about Samgyupsalamat is its flavorful dips and sauces.
Samgyupsalamat offers the usual samgyupsal dips like sesame oil, spicy
sauce, and salt with pepper, but you can also ask for cheese fondue and
gravy if you want to add more flavors to your barbecue. I liked the sesame
oil very much. I loved how it added another layer of savory flavor to the
grilled meats. I think I had three or more refills of the sesame
oil.
I also liked the spicy dipping sauce where I would dunk the meat after
wrapping it in a lettuce leaf. The texture of the fresh lettuce leaves,
the smoky flavors of the grilled meats, and the delicious dips provided a
pleasant food experience that got me hooked.
I have not tried the cheese fondue but my companions said that it tasted
mild and not too overpowering. It actually added a hint of creaminess to
the grilled meats.
4. High-quality meat selections
Samgyupsalamt has a wide selection of pork and beef barbecues, noodles, as
well as side dishes. Here is the list of meats and noodles from
Samgyupsalamat's menu:
Pork Menu
- Daepae Samgyupsal (sliced fresh pork belly)
- Buljib Samgyupsal (tenderized fresh pork belly and herb pepper)
- Yangnyum Daepae (sliced fresh pork belly with seasoning sauce)
- Gochujang Samgyupsal (sliced fresh pork belly with sweet and spicy sauce)
- Yangmyum Moksal (pork neck bone steak with sweet seasoning sauce)
Beef Menu
- Beef Bulgogi (Korean pork barbecue with sweet soy sauce)
- Beef Samgyupsal (sliced American beef short plate)
- Yangnyum Beef Samgyup (sliced beef short plate with seasoning sauce)
- Gochujang Beef Samgyup (sliced beef short plate with sweet and spicy sauce)
Noodle Menu
- Gyeran Ramyun (Korean noodle with egg)
- O-deng Ramyun (Korean noodle with Korean fish cake)
- Kimchi Ramyun (Korean noodle with kimchi and egg)
- Dduk Ramyun (Korean noodle with Korean rice cake and egg)
- Beef Ramyun (Korean noodle with imported US beef)
We tried all except for the Yangnyum Moksal because the slices are
thicker, so cooking time would be much longer. The meats were definitely
fresh and of high-quality. Our favorites are the Beef Samgyupsal, Daepae
Samgyupsal, and Beef Bulgogi. The thin slices of meat absorbed the
marinades really well and cooked evenly.
We liked our barbecued meats a little toasted. The slight crunch and the
deep flavors went well with the freshly-crisp lettuce leaves that provided a
refreshing break from the rich meats in between bites.
Unlimited kimchi |
5. Great service
What is commendable about Samgyupsalamt, at least for its Metropolitan branch, is its service. The waiters were all very attentive. When they see plates that are already empty, they would readily approach us and ask us what we wanted to try next. There was no need to call them twice or even shout just for them to take our orders.
Even though there was already a long queue of diners outside, we did not
feel that we were being rushed to finish our meal throughout our stay. That,
I think, elevated our dining experience at Samgyupsalamat to beyond
pleasant.
In the end, Samgyupsalamat's price of P499 per head is definitely worth it.
