The best way to immerse oneself in a particular region’s culture is to eat like a local. And that’s exactly what we did during our recent trip to Dumaguete City. Its food scene offers a good mix of traditional and modern cuisine, catering to the myriad tourists that flock the city. Being a waterfront settlement, expect seafood to be abundant, readily available and affordable at Dumaguete.
Our journey to Dumaguete City is probably the longest we have embarked on so far. When we were planning this trip, we really wanted to sort of immerse ourselves in the experience by traveling via land. We left Bantayan Island before lunch and were at Hagnaya Port after 40 minutes. We boarded a Ceres Bus bound for Tabo-an (Php165/pax) and requested to be dropped off at South Bus Terminal.
In many ways, traveling gave me back my life.
About 5 or so years ago, I took a long, hard look at my life, carefully assessed it and realized that I’ve been wasting a good deal of it in a small cubicle. Since I started working, my world became limited to a restrictive cube farm. I strived to conquer the corporate jungle with much gusto and actually convinced myself that a thriving office career was the sole definition of success.
There’s something about early morning travel that is both invigorating and exciting at the same time. Never mind the lack of sleep, an early start gives you the confidence and the energy to take on the challenges of the day, especially with the thought that you are ahead of the pack.
Thus, as we kicked off our summer adventure this year, we hit the road even as the majority of the metro was still in slumber land. We were bound for Bantayan Island in Cebu and then Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental.
